This gallery contains a small selection of the many architectural paintings I created during my 10 years as a ‘traditional’ artist.

While living in Bath I began a series of vignettes – usually a doorway or window that held some kind of interesting pattern, shape or shadow. Keen to explore texture and lighting effects, I experimented with paint and pastel on sheets of cork; its pitted surface echoed the city’s golden stone perfectly, and the medium soon developed into something of a ‘Joff Carter trademark’.

Beautiful as Bath is, of course it doesn’t have a monopoly on photogenic nooks and crannies. Travels around the UK, Italy, France and New England uncovered a wealth of shutters, balconies, shop fronts and doors ripe for painting – usually decorative, occasionally abstract, always intriguing.

Although the framed originals of these paintings have almost all been sold, a select number will soon be available as limited edition prints. I will also be making a start on new architectural pieces in the very near future – watch this space!

In the meantime, if you are interested in my architectural art and have a particular place in mind, I am always delighted to accept commissions; please contact me to discuss your ideas.
